On Saturday, May 27, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport participated in Doors Open Toronto 2023. This was the first time the airport had hosted the event since 2019, and it was a resounding success. Over 15,000 people visited to get a behind the scenes access to the airport.

'Bloody Boats’ is an art installation about deconstructing and dismantling the symbol of the traumatic journey that immigrants experience. By reproducing and redesigning this piece for Billy Bishop Airport, the artist highlights the site's relevance—an airport on an island, and travel by boat being a crucial component of visiting this location. The repeating visual of a paper boat as a symbol conveys both the disparities, complexities and commonalities between all of the diverse stories tied to one another in this location, time, movement and space.

Nieuport is proud to partner with the Moccasin Identifier to promote public awareness of the ancestral presence of Indigenous people and communities at the Billy Bishop Toronto Centre Airport (BBTCA). Our airport sits on the Treaty Lands of the Mississauga's of the Credit First Nation, a partner of the Moccasin Identifier.

In November 2021, Nieuport Aviation and PortsToronto commissioned a survey of residents of downtown Toronto – living in the Waterfront, Old Toronto, and York/East York neighborhoods - on public perceptions and attitudes towards YTZ. The survey found: 87% of Toronto residents surveyed hold a favourable opinion of Billy Bishop; 85% agree that is an economic benefit for the city and local communities; 2 out of 3 Torontonians surveyed have flown out of Billy Bishop Airport; 42% of Torontonians who fly from YTZ use it for both business and pleasure travel; and support for a US preclearance facility is high (85%).

In honour of the Indigenous Elders, leaders, artists and community members that have lived upon these lands, Nieuport has worked with the Bay of Spirits Contemporary First Nations Art Gallery to plan, curate and install a gallery of Indigenous artwork in the Toronto City Airport Passenger Terminal departures level corridor. It features works from artists both local to the Greater Toronto Area and across Ontario, including Ojibway, Cree and OjiCree peoples.
